WHAT ARE LUTS?

And how can they be used in video & film editing?

Look up tables (LUTs) are a color grading technique that is used in post-production. They are a set of three dimensional coordinates that encode the color and intensity information for each pixel in an image.

It is possible to use LUTs without any knowledge of color grading or video editing software. These are just files with a .cube extension that can be imported into any video editing software. All you need to do is open the file and it will apply the correction automatically.

Look up tables are widely used in post-production because they allow editors to make quick adjustments to the colors and intensities of an image without having to manually change each individual pixel one by one.

A look up table (lut) is a color grading technique that alters the intensity of the image's individual colors.

Look up tables are used in post-production to alter the intensity of a specific color in an image. They work by mapping out all possible color values and assigning them to one of nine levels.

LUTs are a powerful tool in the post production process of video editing. They are used to color grade and stylize footage. LUTs can be applied as a filter or they can be embedded as an effect.

There are five different types of LUTs available: calibration, transform, viewing, 1D and 3D.

LUTs are used through video editing software suites like Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro or coloring grading software like DaVinci Resolve or Speedgrade. They can also be used in motion graphics programs like After Effects.

1D LUTs & 3D LUTs

The most popular types of LUTs are 1D and 3D. Both types use bit size and bit depth to calibrate the lookup table.

A 1D LUT is controlled by a single setting, and can be boiled down to a single gamma curve preset. This is the most basic form of LUT and is often found with the .lut preset

A 3D LUT has much more definition and control. 3D LUTs map hue, saturation, and brightness to an individual axis. These are most oftem found using the .cube file extension.
